NPR: A Dark View Of Russia From U.S. NATO Commander

At a post-summit news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin last July in Helsinki, President Trump did not once mention Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. Nor did he point to its military support of pro-Russian secessionists in eastern Ukraine.

If Trump's aim was to avoid confrontation with a superpower whose nuclear arsenal rivals that of the U.S., or more personally, not to to antagonize an iron-fisted ruler who may or may not have damning information to spill on Trump, his top military commander in Europe does not seem to have gotten the memo.

Appearing this week before the Senate Armed Services Committee, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti sounded an alarm about Russia's aims in the lands west of its border with Europe.

"Russia is a long-term, strategic competitor that wants to advance its own objectives at the expense of U.S. prosperity and security," Scaparrotti, who also leads the U.S. European Command, told the panel.

TASS: Kremlin comments on remarks of new NATO commander in Europe

New commander of NATO’s armed forces in Europe US General Curtis Scaparotti mentioned Russia among NATO’s main security challenges in his first speech at the ceremony of assuming command

MOSCOW, May 5. /TASS/. Russia will safeguard its national interests should there be any threat to them, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said about statements by the newly appointed commander of NATO’s forces in Europe, US General Curtis Scaparotti, who described Russia as one of the new challenges to the alliance’s security.

"Certainly, Russia cannot leave unnoticed any actions that directly or potentially may pose a threat to its national interests. Russia will traditionally protect its interests," Peskov said.

"We’ve said more than once that reviving Russia is not a threat to anyone," he added. "Russia systematically presses for mutually beneficial cooperation with due regard for the interests of all partners and for the joint settlement of conflicts.
