SCMP: China enlists top scientists in mission to become military tech superpower

Experts from within the military to work for its top research institute as China modernises its armed forces to give them cutting-edge equipment and arms

China has gathered 120 researchers from around the military to work for its top research institute as part of a push to develop military applications for artificial intelligence and quantum technology, state media reported.

The military has selected the researchers from across armed forces’ commands to join the Chinese Academy of Military Science, the highest-level research institute of the People’s Liberation Army, according to the PLA Daily.

South China Morning Post: Chinese military sets up hi-tech weapons research agency modelled on US body

Steering committee was created early this year to develop state-of-the-art equipment, state broadcaster reveals.

China’s military has set up a new department modelled on the ­Pentagon’s hi-tech research agency to develop state-of-the-art weapons such as stealth ­aircraft and electromagnetic ­cannons.

The Scientific Research Steering Committee was set up early this year, according to a documentary aired on state broadcaster CCTV that revealed the new department for the first time.

The committee will fall directly under the Central Military Commission (CMC), which is chaired by President Xi Jinping.

One of the salient points of China's 13th Five Year plan unveiled at National's People Congress was President Xi Jinping's promise that in next five years the country would invest heavily in science & technology. Beijing is planning to create a research and development unit to spearhead the modernization of its military defense technology.

China's success in space technology over the past one decade is a clear Indication that the government is already investing in science & technology. While China's emphatic success in space technology is indeed a great source of pride, the country's military technology still has some distance to go.

Even impressive statistics that show China's military exports cannot hide the huge chasm that exists between Beijing's military technology and military technology possessed by many developed western countries.
