The Authors Who Let Slip The Dogs Of War

From The Times Online:

Discussing the plot by British-led mercenaries to overthrow him, President Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea made an important cultural point: “Simon Mann was used as an instrument but there were material and intellectual authors behind it.”

Those authors can now be named. They are Graham Greene, George MacDonald Fraser, Daniel Carney (author of The Wild Geese) and, above all, the undisputed doyen of mercenary fiction, Frederick Forsyth.

Spies read John le Carré, lawyers read Rumpole, private detectives read Sherlock Holmes and policemen read Ian Rankin and Colin Dexter; but no profession is so entirely entranced by and indebted to its own fiction as that of the mercenary. Mercenaries believe their own mythology, and so do we.

Frederick Forsyth, CBE (born August 25, 1938) is an English author and occasional political commentator. He is best known for thrillers such as The Day of the Jackal, The Odessa File, The Dogs of War, The Fist of God, Icon, The Veteran, Avenger and recently The Afghan.

Day Of The Jackal.lit
was Frederick Forsyth's first novel. An assassin known as The Jackal is hired to kill Charles De Gaulle. We know he's going to fail, but the story is a great success despite this knowledge.

The Negotiator.lit
is the story of a ploy to force the President of the USA to resign, or to otherwise prevent him from signing a treaty that would be unfortunate for the bad guys.

The Dogs Of War.lit
tells about a plan to use a team of mercenaries to take over an African country run by a dictator. The ultimate goal: to exploit the country's natural resources.

Deceiver.lit
The Deceiver is a novel by Frederick Forsyth who used the Cold war to tell a story about a retiring agent of the Foreign Office named Sam McCready. He is the head of Deception, Disinformation and Psychological Operations (DD and PsyOps) and is put to a hearing in which his future is to be decided. During this hearing four of his most valued and celebrated cases are recalled.

Fist Of God.lit
is set in the build-up to the first Gulf War, where a British SAS operative is sent to Kuwait and then Baghdad to discover the truth about Saddam Hussein's secret weapon, code-named "The Fist of God".

Fourth Protocol.lit
tells the story of a Russian renegade secret service chief who sends an agent to Britain to assemble and detonate a nuclear bomb near an American base. The expectation is that this will swing the upcoming election in favor of the leftists.

Icon.lit
is set in 1999, at which time Russian politics is in a crisis. A populist Russian politician looks like he will win the upcoming presidential election, but the British secret service has obtained proof that this man will be worse than Hitler was in Germany. The British and the Americans launch a covert operation to derail this man's election campaign.

The Odessa File.lit
is a story about the hunt to bring a WW II war criminal to justice.

The Devils Alternative.lit
is a cold war spy thriller. We are presented with a Russian leader and an American President trying to avoid WW III in the face of a crisis
