Pentagon Despair Over NATO and Afghanistan

SANGIN, Afghanistan - COL Abudul Majeed, 1st Kandak, 209th Afghan National Army Corps
commander, (left) combat advised by a US Army Special Forces company commander

From The Captain's Journal:

The Captain’s Journal doesn’t like to be negative, but it is necessary to engage in truth-telling. For more than half a year The Captain’s Journal has been in a state of near despair over the failure of NATO to deploy forces to Afghanistan, employ a realistic set of rules of engagement, and implement a coherent, consistent counterinsurgency strategy. There are seasons in counterinsurgency, and the campaign will soon suffer under the weight of U.S. and NATO being viewed as occupiers rather than liberators. Timeliness is everything in COIN.

My Comment: I first started reading the Captain's Journal over one year ago. I was on his mass mailing, receiving an email from him every second or third day. I first ignored the emails then one day I opened one his letters .... I have been a fan ever since.

I find his observations on the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters always dead on. He analyzes the conflict from a military tactical point of view .... writing in simple English that is even easy for me to understand.

I have to credit him for changing my views on this conflict, that for the West to win we must radically change our approach and altitude towards the war. That to do this operation half heartedly with minimum resources and a lack of will from the people and politicians back home .... will in the end result in our defeat.

A blog that should be on everyone's to read list.
