Rocket From Gaza Strikes Israeli City -- New York Times
JERUSALEM — Palestinian militants fired a long-range rocket from Gaza into the Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon on Tuesday, the first such rocket since a tenuous truce took hold more than two weeks ago.
The rocket caused some property damage but no casualties. The launch presented a new challenge to Israeli leaders ahead of elections on Feb. 10.
Israel pulled its troops out of Hamas-ruled Gaza on Jan. 18, ending a devastating 22-day military campaign that Israel said was meant in part to silence such rocket attacks. Israel and Hamas declared separate cease-fires.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert promised a “sharp” and “disproportionate” response to the continuing trickle of rocket and mortar fire, which until Tuesday targeted areas close to the Gaza border. But the Israeli military response has so far been limited, targeting the actual launching squads, smuggling tunnels along Gaza’s border with Egypt and in one case, an empty Hamas security post.
