Japan is preparing to deploy a controversial missile defence system against an imminent North Korean rocket launch, in what could be the first use of the so-called “Son of Star Wars” system to knock out an intercontinental ballistic missile.
In a move that could have strategic implications for the whole northeast Asian region, the Japanese Government plans to dispatch naval destroyers equipped with anti-missile systems to the seas off North Korea, as the isolated dictatorship continues preparations for the launch of a rocket.

My Comment: If the Japanese decide to use their missile defense system to shoot down a North Korean ballistic missile, this will heighten tensions in this part of Asia by a factor of ten.
While the Japanese have every right to protect their homeland, the use of such a weapon system would have profound strategic implications. The first impact would be a high-tech arms race in the region. The Chinese would rush to develop their own missile defense systems, and the North Koreans would emphasize developing a large number of missiles to overwhelm any Japanese Defense system.
South Korea and Taiwan would then follow with their own defense measures.
Russia and the rest of the world would come to a different conclusion .... if the Japanese system works, the more advanced American system would also work. The implications of that will fill this blog with posts that will keep me busy for years.
Pandoras box is about to be open .... so .... will the North Koreans open it?
From my vantage point .... and knowing a little bit of the Korean mentality .... I would say yes.
