Lebanon: Fears of Shi'ite-Sunni Violence

From Time Magazine/AP:

(BEIRUT) — No one knows when an international court will issue its first indictments in the assassination of Lebanon's former prime minister, but Lebanese are already afraid it could spark a wave of violence between its Shi'ite and Sunni communities.

My Comment: The Sunni - Shiite sects of Islam have been at war with each other since the birth of Islam 1,300 years ago. But is conflict possible in Lebanon .... I will have to say yes.

One only needs to look at Iraq and see how Shiite - Sunni differences resulted in one of the bloodiest civil wars in Arab history (2007 - 2008). If it was not for U.S. intervention with the surge .... the bloodbath would have consumed hundreds of thousands of lives.

Can the same type of conflict erupt in Lebanon .... the odds do not favor it, but if the situation gets out of control anything is possible.
