When Yukio Hatoyama was asked last week whether his Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) would win the country's general election, he turned to the camera and answered simply: "We have to."
As it turned out, Hatoyama did not just win – he triumphed. In one of the most stunning reversals of electoral fortune in history, the DPJ took 308 seats to only 119 for the incumbent Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which had ruled for all but 11 months since 1955.
