SALT LAKE CITY — After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Air Force created a program to improve defense of its bases against chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear attack — and to keep critical missions operating if one occurred.
But inspectors have found that a third of the equipment purchased nationwide for that — from radiation and chemical detectors to protective gear and decontamination equipment — is now missing or not in working order.
Also, inspectors say that most firefighters and security forces at bases have not been trained sufficiently on how to use such equipment, nor how to operate a robust program to protect bases against weapons of mass destruction.
