USS Enterprise, The Carrier That Changed Everything, Turns 50 -- Stars and Stripes

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia -- Nine days after he turned 18, Robert "Bobby" Hawk, stepped out of his father's 1951 Chevrolet on a humid, overcast Tuesday morning and began the walk from downtown Newport News to the James River waterfront.

Before Hawk entered the gates of the Newport News shipyard on Aug. 1, 1961, his father turned to him and offered only four words: "Don't let me down."

"That's all he had to say," Hawk said. "My daddy didn't play no games."
