Iran Tracks, Films U.S. Navy Near Strait Of Hormuz -- Politico
Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iran said Thursday it tracked and recorded video of a U.S. aircraft carrier during its Navy drill near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported that the country had photographed and filmed an aircraft carrier on the vital oil route Thursday, according to The Associated Press.

My Comment: The U.S. warships that crossed the Straits of Hormuz and filmed by the Iranians were the USS John Stennis, and the guided-missile cruiser Mobile Bay.
What is my take of the filming .... I am not an expert, but to me it appears that those Iranian planes were flying very close to the USS John Stennis and not being "challenged" while doing it. But like I said .... I am not an expert.
International waters and the surrounding nations have the right to do fly-bys to inspect, if memory serves.
ReplyDeleteThis video is about as exciting as someone filming a US Army convoy driving by their house and not being challenged.

Who would ever shoot a propeller plane?
ReplyDeleteThe USS Cole was almost sunk by a small boat filled with around 400-700 lbs of explosives .... so a lot is possible by innocent looking boats or propeller aircraft.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why I mentioned the lack of a challenge from the USS John Stennis is that I do recall that there is a certain prohibited distance for an approaching boat/plane/etc. to a high valued target like an aircraft carrier .... even in international waters. That is why when I looked at the video, I just did not realize that you can get this close to such a juicy target.
This is my son's ship. You can be absolutely sure that they were prepared to keep peace by any means necessary, even if it came to sinking another boat or shooting down an aircraft. That they did nothing that could be construed as aggressive should be telling. The threat was minimal and they responded to it accordingly. Iran is like a toddler stomping it's feet and threatening to hold it's breath if it doesn't get its way. Almost laughable, but really rather sad.
