Timbuktu Encircled As Mali Coup Intensifies -- The Telegraph

Desert rebels fighting Mali's military junta have encircled the ancient trading city of Timbuktu as they continue their lightning sweep taking towns across the country's north.

The main Tuareg fighting force said it had besieged the city a day after it took control of the garrison town of Gao, which hosts the largest military base in Mali's north.

The Azawad National Liberation Movement (MNLA) has capitalised on the lack of national authority that followed a coup last month when middle-ranking officers in Mali's army ousted the president, Amadou Toure.
