Why Recent Intelligence Leaks Are Going To Damage President Obama's Administration

Leaker-in-Chief -- Lee Smith, Weekly Standard

The Justice Department has launched an investigation into the White House’s handling of classified information. The spur seems to have been the June 1 New York Times article by David Sanger, sourced to current and former U.S. officials, revealing sensitive details about the Stuxnet and Flame computer worms and other parts of the Obama administration’s cyber campaign to disrupt and spy on Iran’s nuclear weapons program. By the way, none of the officials, according to Sanger, “would allow their names to be used because the effort remains highly classified, and parts of it continue to this day.”

My Comment: To begin, I have no proof but I sincerely doubt that President Obama was instrumental in having all of this intel leaked to the New York Times. If he did, this would disqualify him from holding his office and any position of authority that he has on national security .... a prospect that I am sure he is fully aware of. But .... he does have a leak .... and when one reads what has been leaked one would quickly realize that this could have only come from a handful of his most trusted advisers on his national security team or in his political office.

As to why is this a big deal .... one can only look at the Valerie Plame case and the enormous publicity and news coverage of that story. Even though she was no longer an officer working in the field ..... her outing was big news, and it ended dominating the news cycles for years. But when one compares that leak to the avalanche and detailed intel that has been leaked in just the past few weeks .... there is (bluntly) no comparison. Cyber war against Iran, kill lists, the doctor who helped the CIA to find Bin Laden .... the list is long and damaging .... and someone has to be held accountable .... even if it reaches into the White House.

Update: A must read commentary on this growing scandal for the Obama administration is here.
