House GOP Presses Narrow Funding Bill; President Says Health Law Is 'Here to Stay'

WASHINGTON—The first government shutdown in 17 years showed little sign of ending quickly, as House Republicans came up with a new plan to fund the government piece by piece.

House Republicans are expected to bring up three bills later Tuesday that would restore funding for veterans' services, national parks and allow District of Columbia schools to use local funds to continue running schools and other services through Dec. 15. GOP lawmakers said they anticipated bringing up many other bills in coming days.
