Poroshenko’s Statement That Ukraine Conflict Can End by September Far From Reality - DPR -- RIA Novosti
MOSCOW, August 31 (RIA Novosti) – The Kiev authorities’ statements that conflict in eastern Ukraine can be ended by September are idealistic and far from reality, Deputy Prime Minister of Donetsk People’s Republic Andrei Purgin said in an interview with RIA Novosti Saturday.
"Their statements are of Martian nature, these people are dwelling in an emerald garden on Mars and commenting on the situation, which has nothing to do with reality. In fact, all these comments are often made not for internal use but for external use, for Europe. Such claims hit the headlines, then the IMF allocates money, so their goal is to get money from the IMF," Purgin said.
Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he expects that implementation of his peace plan for the crisis in eastern Ukraine can stop the war in the region in early September.

Update: Putin: Impossible to say when political crisis in Ukraine will end -- RT
My Comment: If there was an eagerness on both sides for peace talks .... the civil war could end in weeks. But there is no sentiment for such talks .... especially now. Thousands have been killed (not the official tally of 2,600) .... thousands even more wounded. Infrastructure and property destroyed on a massive scale. One million refugees. Nope .... this war is not going to end in September .... in fact .... my biggest fear now is that this war is just starting.
I think it may well end in September, with Ukrainian capitulation to Russian conditions. I felt all along that Putin wouldn't let the separatist lose, but I thought and perhaps he did too that it could be done on a low key basis. I felt that the Ukrainians were over extended and had serious structural problems with their military which they had papered over and could discount with a quick victory. Of course it's hindsight, but they should have excepted offered conditions 3 weeks ago. I'll also say this, regardless of whose right or wrong on the issue, the US bears a large amount of blame for the scale and length of fighting. After every visit by an US VIP's (Biden, etc) to Kiev the Ukrainians either hardened their negotiating position and/or initiated military operations. I believe they were urged into the actions by the US with promises of economic and military support, neither of which was forthcoming in a meaningful way. They have been left to their fate and they were fools for listening to the West.
ReplyDeleteYour analysis of what Putin was thinking is spot on .... be low key .... set the table for talks and negotiations .... and get a deal that will placate not everyone .... but at least the majority.
ReplyDeleteWell .... this thinking blew up.
You are right that Poroshenko should have accepted the conditions that were offered 3 weeks ago .... Moscow was begging Kiev to take it, the rebels were pleading for a ceasefire, and the Europeans were prepared to offer billions in aid that would have satisfied everyone. I even learned (tonight) that Russia was prepared to offer generous natural gas terms to Ukraine if they accepted giving Donetsk and Luhansk a small level of autonomy over culture and language .... an offer that I know would have satisfied a majority of Ukrainians and Russian-Ukranians.
But no .... Poroshenko reminds me of my dad .... stubborn, uncompromising, and slow to respond to opportunities. But my dad knew his limitations, and worked accordingly. I do not think Poroshenko knows his limitations .... or even cares about them.
As for the U.S. .... you are right that they have not helped the situation. V.P. Biden got a deal for his son to sit on the board of Ukraine's largest energy company .... and he has been using his influence to promote a horrible U.S. agenda in Ukraine.
He and the White House have given Kiev hope ... that when the chips are down the U.S. will provide economic and military aid. Unfortunately .... as the death toll continues to escalate in this civil war .... this U.S. aid is not coming to fruition ....and never will.
