David Cameron And Barack Obama Aim For Broad-Based Assault On Isis -- The Guardian
Prime minister's rhetoric around Isis ramps up, despite there being no immediate plans for UK involvement in US air strikes
The building blocks for a lengthy military and political assault on Islamic State (Isis) forces were being put in place on Thursday after Barack Obama and David Cameron agreed the principles of a campaign that will extend through Kurdish northern Iraq, Sunni Iraq and possibly into Syria itself.
Cameron made clear that the campaign is dependent on the formation of a broad-based non-sectarian government in Baghdad, ideally by the Iraqis' own deadline of 14 September, as well as support from key countries in the region, including Jordan and Turkey.
It was stressed that British involvement in the US bombing campaign designed to drive back Isis in northern Iraq may be weeks away, even though Conservative whips are already canvassing Tory MPs to see if they will support a bombing campaign in Syria and Iraq.

My Comment: The Islamic State's power base is in Syria .... not Iraq. Attacking their forces in northern Iraq while leaving Syria alone will not significantly degrade their military capabilities nor touch their power base. Such a limited campaign will .... in my opinion .... only mean a longer war and more casualties. On a side note .... it appears that the input from the military for such a military strategy was limited at best.
This photo sure gives you a clue as to what these people think their priorities are.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same, James...
ReplyDeleteEven though I know why they do it (publicity, good face) it makes no logical sense other than a poor attempt to try to dillusion the public that your in 'touch' with the people, when it is far from the truth.
I have a real problem with Obama over this.
ReplyDeleteObama says that he is authorized by Public law 107-243 to fight ISIS in Iraq. He said that he would get support form Congress for attacking ISIS in Syria.
The question is: Has he?
If he has not is this going to be one of his famous 3 month waits or longer before he does?
ISIS will move some assets to Syria to prevent their destruction. This will enable ISIS potentially to last longer and put everyone in the world at risk longer. So why will Obama not get together with congress and do something?
I will do something. I have a pen. I can write satire (with a lot of work on my nonexistent literary skills) like Gulliver's Travels.
