CBC: CSE tracks millions of downloads daily: Snowden documents
Global sites for sharing movies, photos, music targeted in mass anti-terror surveillance
WNU Editor: I live in Canada .... and I am not surprised by this revelation. As everyone knows this blog covers conflicts/terrorism/wars/and defense related issues .... and yes .... I sometimes wonder if the "powers that be" are snooping on the work and research that I do for this blog (I am always assuming that they do). But as my lawyer told me years ago .... if you do nothing wrong and you are innocent .... there is no reason to worry. I have no reason to worry .... but this type of surveillance still annoys me .... because it is not how I envisioned the internet was going to be when I started to explore commercial possibilities on the web in the early 1990s.

WNU Editor,
ReplyDelete"But as my lawyer told me years ago .... if you do nothing wrong and you are innocent .... there is no reason to worry. "
Your Lawyer is a little behind the times.
It's more that you don't offend, and always vomply, as the Stirling Verdict shows, they can even " reclassify" 50 year old unclassified documents, then prosecute one for publishing them, and as a Florida case has shown, Blogs are not "journalists", and Internationality is not a protection.
And that's if they want to play nice. If they don't want to play nice, they now have all the powers in the world, ex-Stazi are just amazed.
Jay ... I already have had experience with that .... but not with this blog. Canada's copyright laws for books are different from American law .... so someone like Hemingway and his works are treated as public domain here, but not in the U.S.. Make a long story short .... I had to contend with lawyers from the U.S. on this case. We won .... but it was a hassle. Now upgrade a legal dispute to security documents or information that is classified .... if they want .... they can make my life (and anyone else's) .... pure hell.
ReplyDeleteAs to my lawyer and friend he is a well known criminal lawyer in Quebec and he is up to date on Canadian law .... but it is true that borders are disappearing .... and what I may do here is legal and proper .... but somewhere else it can be argued it is illegal and criminal .... and you will not even know about it until you cross the border and they arrest you.
WNU Editor,
ReplyDeleteNow a days, they can just put the "wrong" files on your laptop, claim the " wrong" links in your browser history, the " wrong " emails ,
And the RCMP come visit, and you wind up in jail, with the " wrong" kinda conviction on your record, for surviving in gen pop.
