Egypt's War Against Islamic Militants In The Sinai Is Intensifying

Wall Street Journal: Egypt Says Its Forces Killed Scores of Militants in Sinai Battle

Warplanes, helicopters carried out deadly airstrikes against Islamic State’s affiliate, military says

CAIRO—Egypt’s military said Friday its warplanes and helicopters killed 70 militants in two days of airstrikes against Islamic State’s affiliate in the northern Sinai Peninsula.

Rebels belonging to the radical group’s local branch, Sinai Province, swarmed more than a dozen army positions around the town of Sheikh Zuwayed on Wednesday in the largest assault on Egypt’s military in recent years.

Thirty-five Islamist fighters were killed during air raids on the first day of fighting, some of them by the militants’ own improvised explosive devices as they fled the bombing, state media quoted unnamed army sources as saying.

Another 35 militants were killed by air raids on Thursday, as government forces continued fighting to regain control of Sheikh Zuwayed, the state media reported.
