New York Times: India and Pakistan Accuse Each Other in Deaths of Civilians

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan and India on Friday accused each other of targeting civilians in the latest deadly exchange of cross-border fire, as relations continued to worsen just days after talks between top security officials of both countries were canceled.

Pakistan’s military said that at least eight civilians had been killed and at least 47 wounded by Indian fire in the eastern Sialkot region of Pakistan. In response, the country’s Army chief visited the border area and accused India of “terrorizing the civilian population,” according to a spokesman.

At the same time, Indian officials said that at least three civilians had been killed by Pakistani fire across the border. Neither country reported any military casualties in the fighting.
