* Thousands visited grounds near the Imperial War Museum Duxford, in Cambridgeshire, to watch the re-enactment
* It was held to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when RAF pilots repelled the German Luftwaffe
* The display featured Messerschmitts, Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes staging mock duels amid the panic of sirens

Tens of thousands of people flocked to a stunning airshow yesterday to watch a re-enactment of the Battle of Britain, where Spitfires and Messerschmitts duelled above the skies of Cambridgeshire.

At an event organised to mark the 75th anniversary of the battle between the RAF and Hermann Goering's Luftwaffe, spectators were treated to a rare display featuring 20 Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes and several German Messerschmitts.

Held above the Imperial War Museum Duxford in Cambridgshire, pilots re-enacted the rush to their aircraft amid the panic of sirens and overhead presence of enemy fighters.

WNU Editor: That must have been quite a sight to see.
