The Dogs Of War Are Going High-Tech

The Cerberus Digital Canine Transmitter (pictured) is named after the multi-headed hellhound that guards the underworld in Greek mythology. The camera system is fitted to the dog using a harness and can send images back to a handler hiding in safety, allowing them to scout for dangers that might lay ahead

Daily Mail: The CYBERDOGS of war: Canines could spy on the enemy using remote-controlled cameras mounted on their backs

* Cerberus Digital Canine Transmitter can be fitted onto a dog harness
* The pop up camera allows the animal to squeeze through tight spaces
* A handler see images from the camera from safety up to 1,600 feet away
* It could used for battlefield reconnaissance or police surveillance

They already act as guards, search for missing people and sniff out bombs, but soon dogs could be taking a role as scouts on the frontline of battlefields with the help of new high-tech harnesses.

The Cerberus Digital Canine Transmitter, named after the multi-headed hellhound that guards the underworld in Greek mythology, is a camera system that fits onto a dog's back.

The pop-up high definition camera, which comes equipped with sensitive microphones, infrared and lights, could see 'cyberdogs' performing reconnaissance for soldiers.

Update: Cerberus is top dog -- IHS Jane 360

WNU Editor: No rolling around in the grass for these dogs.
