VOA: Russia's Social Media Sleuths Uncover Info Authorities Want Hidden
MOSCOW - The news of Russia's first casualty among its troops in Syria is remarkable not only because his family doubts the official explanation for his death — that he committed suicide — but also for the fact that it was uncovered by social media sleuths.
Conflict Intelligence Team, an online group founded by Russian blogger Ruslan Leviev, discovered the Russian contract serviceman's death on October 25 by combing through social media pages.
Responding to emailed questions from VOA's Moscow bureau, Leviev said his group was looking to confirm earlier reports of Russians being killed in Syria.
WNU Editor: I personally love Russian social media .... and it is the main media platform that the Kremlin is most afraid of. In a certain way it is like America talk radio .... a place where people go to hear and/or read up on the news that is different from what the main stream media is peddling. And while there is a lot of garbage on the web .... the smart people know where to look when it comes to reading up on an alternative point of view or to get an insight in the news that the main stream media is ignoring and/or downplaying.
Of course, that is why they made popular blogs "mass media" for all censorship purposes.
