Will The Tractor Beam Become A Reality One Day?

Daily Beast: ‘Star Wars’ Tractor Beams Are Real

Scientists have figured out how to create a sound beam that can hold, move and rotate small objects from far away.

A “tractor beam” is a science-fiction term that refers to a device capable of pulling in distant objects without any physical contact.

As any true Star Wars fan could tell you, the Death Star was equipped with hundreds of tractor beam generators that were used to seize and capture ships like Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon. But even those who are not quite geeky enough to get those references will still be amazed to know that scientists have now created a real-life sonic tractor beam that can be used to hold, move, and even rotate small objects completely without touch.

WNU Editor: We are still very very far away from a practical device .... but the science is cool.

Si-fi has laid out the high level functional specifications for lots of seemingly impossible stuff. Eventually the detailed specifications are written and the impossible becomes reality. Just a matter of time and opportunity.

I would maintain that the "Tractor beam" has been in existence for many decades. Anyone driving their car on american interstates (Autobahn drivers would have seen this) knows that when passing another vehicle they lock on an invisible tractor beam that allows them to be drug along with you until you're going 20-25 mph faster than originally to pass them.
