U.K.'s Anti-War Movement Protests Against Proposed British Military Action In Syria

The Guardian: Thousands attend protests against UK airstrikes on Syria

Stretch of Whitehall blocked by 4,000-strong protest outside Downing Street, and smaller rallies held in other cities

Thousands of people gathered outside Downing Street and in cities around the UK on Saturday to protest against the government’s plans to bomb Islamic State targets in Syria.

The protests, organised at short notice by the Stop the War Coalition, followed renewed calls for military action against the terror group in the wake of the attacks in Paris two weeks ago.

WNU Editor: Only 4,000 protesters ?!?!?! .... I am old enough to remember anti-war protests in the U.K. in the 1980s that numbered in the hundreds of thousands. The vote authorizing Britain to launch air strikes will probably happen this Wednesday .... it should pass because of the Conservative majority in parliament. As for the British Labour party .... they are deeply split on this issue .... Jeremy Corbyn faces humiliation as more than 100 Labour MPs plan to defy leader over air-strikes (The Telegraph). More here .... Labour leadership in turmoil over vote on UK military action in Syria (The Guardian).

  1. Well, the anti-war movement ain't what it used to be. I imagine a lot of people realized that the only time getting into the streets works is when the noise is directed at "undemocratic regimes" abroad and after picking a colour. Like the anti globalization movement, Occupy, and a whole host of others, initiatives that do not address state power are doomed to fizzle out. Especially those dominated by weekend warrior protestors.

Anyway, I'm am not aware of any other reports on this, but it looks as if the Turkish Army has shelled SAA forces advancing in Latakia province.

  2. Looks like the anti-war movement shrunk in parallel with their air force.

  3. Looks like a significant number of intellectuals on the left shifted toward humanitarian interventionists.

Pays better than actually confronting the interests of Western states and their salafist allies in the ME.

    Follow the money,always.

Most of the Protestors from the early 'Aughts, that I know, who fought the spurious charges in court, are still in Court, as the Government continues it's appeals through the full chain of tha Court system.

A few, finally, ( last couple of years) have won Civil Cases for the violation of their Rights, gotten million dollar payouts, which barely cover the decade+ of legal costs.

Those who took the plea deal to avoid the spurious criminal charges, forfeited their Civil Rights in perpetuity. Lots of people I know are barred from the Internet, not allowed cell phones, and forfeit their parole if they attempt any contact, ( mail, phone, face to face) with other past members of Protest Groups.
