The Australian/AFP: American boots on the ground in Kobane, Syria, to train Kurds

US soldiers are in Kobane, the town in northern Syria almost destroyed in fighting with Islamic State, to train Kurdish forces to battle the jihadists.

Mustapha Abdi, an activist in the town on the Turkish border, said yesterday the American instructors had arrived “in recent hours”, in the first official deployment of US ground troops in Syria.

A source with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) said the Americans would help plan offensives against two Syrian cities held by Islamic State — Jarablus and the ISIS “capital”, Raqqa.

At the same time, they would help co-ordinate with the Kurds and their Arab and Syrian Christian allies on the ground airstrikes on ISIS by the US-led coalition, the YPG source said.

Update: Report: 50 U.S. Soldiers in Kobane, Syria to Train Kurds (Breitbart).
