Worst-Case Terrorism Scenarios That Are More Likely Than You Think

Jane Harman, Reuters: Worst-case scenarios that are more likely than you think

The likelihood that a Russian charter airplane, Metrojet 9268, was felled by a bomb after leaving Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, highlights how many national security stories we may be missing — stories that pose at least as much of a threat to the United States as the development of an Iranian nuclear weapon.

Consider: Al Qaeda is still fixated on blowing up airplanes, a dream that may have just played out in the Sinai. But other risks include loose nukes in Pakistan, three-stage rockets in North Korea that can hit the United States, radiological weapons on the Russian black market and the possibility that terrorists with a demonstrated interest in biological warfare will make use of the next major infectious disease outbreak to turn human beings into weapons.

All these threats are getting worse. All might do even more damage, near-term, than Iran.

WNU Editor: This Reuters commentary was posted before the Paris attacks .... but it gives a heads-up that future terror attacks can (and probably will) be far worse. What are my worst case scenarios .... chemical agents like nerve gas being released, radiological weapons, or multiple downing of passenger jets in a short period of time (one hour) with teams of terrorists using MANPADs. There is also the Paris/Mumbai model .... but multiple attacks in multiple cities all within a day.

Update: So true .... Paris attack is Europe’s security nightmare (Peter Apps, Reuters).

  1. Several years ago French Muslim's in keffiyeh threatened to attack, at some unspecified future time, the night club that was attacked last night in Paris. This club was owned by Jews and is reported to have hosted pro-Israel gatherings. So, it seems that this attack was an anti-Semetic attack.

    Video speaks for itself.

    From the website:

In most of the recent terror attacks in Europe in the past few years, muslims attack a free speech or cultural target as well as a Jewish one. In last night's attack it appeared as if they broke with the pattern. Except they didn't. The nightclub was Jewish owned, the band had payed Israel and rumours were circulated that the club held fund raisers for the IDF and Israeli border security, although I am not aware that any business ever held fund raisers for a country's security service or that any nation accepts funds that way.
