Michael Peck, National Interest: Shock and Awed: Yes, Russia Can Still Fight a War
Newsflash: Russia is not some tinpot third-world basket case with a make-believe army, but rather the nation with the third-highest military spending on the planet.
The world was astounded. Russian planes dropping smart bombs on Syrian rebels! Russian cruise missiles blasting rebel targets from hundreds of miles away!
How could this be? Whatever happened to the hapless Russian military, the bumblers that embarrassed themselves in Chechnya and Georgia?
Actually, here's the better question: Why is anyone surprised that Russia knows how to fight a war?
WNU Editor: Yes .... Russia can still fight a war .... but more to the point .... much of the Russian public (for the moment) appears to be in support of such a campaign.

The oligarchs are in line too.

ReplyDeleteRussia has all the land it could ever wish for, what need does it have for war. Let's be honest, it just a military exercise/war game.
ReplyDeletewhen Russia puts a couple of Divisions into Syria, then I might believe that Russia knows how to fight a war--
ReplyDeleteAs yet, Russia has no need to put a couple of Divisions into Syria,
DeleteThey have Syrians, Druse, Kurds, Hezboallah, Palistinians, Iraqi and Iranian volenteers to do most of the ground combat.
For some strange reason, Russian local allies fight, and fight hard,
Ours just run away.
