Pentagon Will Not Demote Retired General David Petraeus

Reuters: Retired general, ex-CIA chief David Petraeus to receive no further punishment

U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has decided not to impose further punishment on David Petraeus, a former U.S. military commander and CIA director who admitted sharing classified information with his mistress, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

The short letter was sent by Stephen Hedger, the assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs, and the decision is in line with an Army review.

Petraeus resigned as head of the CIA in 2012 after it was revealed that he was having an affair with his biographer, Army Reserve officer Paula Broadwell. When he pleaded guilty to mishandling classified information, a court document signed by Petraeus and prosecutors said that in 2011, Petraeus illegally gave Broadwell access to official binders.

  1. I had really expected General Petraus to be demoted. With Mrs. Clinton under investigation for mishandling classified information as well and the government probably looking to go light on her it might not have looked good to go tougher on the general. I suppose they had little choice since I'm pretty sure they plan to go light on Mrs. Clinton.

  2. B. Poster,
Nothing for certain, but yeah, I bet Hillary and her supporters are taking much comfort from this bit of news.

  3. On further reflection I think the "email, Ben Ghazi" thing was an insurance policy Obama had for when Hillary was elected President (which was considered a sure thing not so long ago), but it's gotten a little out of the Administration's control. Now with the various leaks and the Patraeus news, it probably boils down to if Hillary does really well in the early primaries then she skates, if not then she's gone and Biden steps into the race.
The key to all of this was contained in the recent Sanders/Obama meeting. Was a warning delivered or a buy off offered?

  4. James. In both Russia and China my friends are always asking my opinion on what is going to happen in this years' US Presidential race. I tell them that Clinton is facing some serious legal hurdles, and that she is definitely not a sure thing.

  5. WNU,
It seems Hillary has the same problem Caesar had when he lost his Gaulish command. Win or else. Caesar crossed the Rubicon and won the prize. Whether she knew it or not Ben Ghazi was her Rubicon. Can she follow through?
