Syrian War News Updates -- January 3, 2016

New Zealand Herald: Heavy toll as Syria's war grinds on

More than 55,000 people were killed in Syria in 2015, the country's fifth year of war, including more than 2500 children, a monitor said yesterday.

The total number of dead since the beginning of the conflict had reached more than 260,000, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, though the number of those killed last year was lower than the 76,021 people who died in 2014.

In 2015 alone, the monitor documented the deaths of 55,219 people, including 13,249 civilians. Among them were 2574 children, it said.

  1. The "Syria Observatory..." is actually Qatari-funded Rami Abdul-Rahman, AKA the Coventry clothier, who has been putting out numbers on Syria casualties for years.
news report: When he isn't fielding calls from international media, Abdulrahman is a few minutes down the road at his clothes shop, which he runs with his wife. Cited by virtually every major news outlet since an uprising against the iron rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began in March, the observatory has been a key source of news on the events in Syria.
