The Islamic State Now Has MANPADS In Their Arsenal

Threat Matrix: Islamic State uses MANPADS to shoot down Iraqi helicopter near Baiji

The Islamic State has released photographs purporting to show its fighters downing an Iraqi helicopter near Baiji with a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS). The photos were disseminated on Twitter by Islamic State supporters after being posted elsewhere on the Internet. The terrorist organization has taken to releasing its propaganda via its supporters on Twitter as the majority of its official accounts are continuously being suspended by the social media site.

The photos bear the title of Wilyat Salahaddin, as Baiji is located within that administrative division of the Islamic State.

Media reports indicate that two Iraqi Army helicopters have been shot down near Baiji over the past week. According to DW:

WNU Editor: It looks like someone sold MANPADS to the Islamic State. The question needs to be asked .... is it only a question of time before we start hearing of reports of passenger airlines being shot down by these weapons.

Unless they're taking off/coming to land passenger jets are usually flying way above MANPAD range AFAIK

But it is bad news for helicopters, older strike aircraft such as the Su-24 and CAS jets like the Su-25 and A-10.

If you guys remember, there was a bunch of stories a month or so ago about ISIS's "weapons" lab.

In one of the more serious news reports, it was noted that ISIS had backwards engineered their own "seeker" batteries. This would infer that ISIS has refurbished old SAA stockpiles of MANPADs.

What was that?

Pull all our troops back and defend the shores of America.

Who cares of a few American tourists or business people are blown out of the sky.

It is acceptable losses for the isolationists, I mean ostriches.

And your point in relation to either the article or the comments was what?

Jay,

The point is obvious.

How well can a nation survive without its' expats both temporary and permanent or its business travelers?

You can't protect them hiding behind the shoreline

Anzino,

Neither the article, nor the comments makes any mention of isolationism,

So again, how does your "rant" relate in any way, shape or form to the article or the comments?
