Heavy Fighting Being Reported Between Azerbaijan And Armenia Forces In Nagorno-Karabakh

DW: Fighting erupts on Nagorno-Karabakh front lines

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces have clashed along the front lines of the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh region. Both sides have reported numerous casualties, while trading blame for the renewed fighting.

Officials from Armenia and Azerbaijan on Saturday both accused each other of violating a cease-fire after fighting broke out on the front lines of the rebel Nagorno-Karabakh region, which lies inside Azerbaijan, but is under the control of ethnic Armenians.

The Armenian Defense Ministry said Azerbaijan used warplanes, tanks and artillery in a bid to penetrate into Nagorno-Karabakh, adding that "Azerbaijani authorities bear all responsibility for the unprecedentedly supercharged situation."

  1. While the world talks about the Nobel Prize winner's attempt to tamp down nuclear terrorism, places like the Balkans, Ukraine, Syria, Cyprus, the South China Sea, Korea, Kashmir, and Nagorno-Karabakh have the potential to flare into far more consequential conflicts directly involving nuclear armed states.
Having a city burn will suck, certainly, but having entire countries or even the world burn - I think - will suck more.
Those who were afraid of Turkey and Russia going to blows over Syria and possibly dragging NATO into war should be far more worried about the vitriolic conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan...

  2. Frozen conflicts are a ticking time-bomb that provides Russia (and Soviet Union before) with an unique opportunity/tool to divide and rule, use those conflicts to its own benefits when necessary and put pressure on those governments. Wherever there is a frozen conflict in the former Soviet republics, there is always a hidden Russian hand, Russian interest and the Russian plan behind it. Nobody has benefited more from the bloodshed and ethnic cleansing in the former Soviet territories than the Kremlin a.k.a. the Russian political establishment and the GRU. And the belief that a frozen conflict will always be on pause is a false assumption, since the Russians have always manipulated those conflicts force their own political choices upon various governments. This has happened many times in Georgia (Abkhazian region of Georgia and Samachablo), Moldova, Armenia & Azerbaijan and Ukraine. And this won’t stop anytime soon, since all the keys to solving these problems are in the Kremlin in Putin’s hands. As long as these conditions persists, we will have sudden flare-ups and short-term bloodshed – mini-wars in these regions.
