Has The Islamic State Created A New Type Of Bomb?

BBC: Iraq violence: Did IS use new type of bomb for deadliest attack?

On a Baghdad street once throbbing with life, there is a soft recitation of prayers, a silent lighting of candles, and quiet sobbing at the edges of charred ruins.

Sweepers start to clear away debris, and drills buzz in the shells of gutted shops.

But the scene of the deadliest ever attack carried out by so-called Islamic State (IS) anywhere in the world is still a makeshift shrine. On 3 July, 292 Iraqis lost their lives here.

This week, the haunting strains of a cello wafted through the cavernous black hulks where two popular centres once drew in Iraqis for shopping and socialising.

Update: 'Unique, strange, and terrible' — ISIS may have created a new type of bomb (Business Insider)

WNU Editor: The Islamic State probably has a few chemists helping them in developing these bombs .... and I would not be surprise if these chemists are high priority targets for coalition and Iraqi forces.

  1. WNU Editor,

They are not "chemists", simply bombmakers.

Grade 9 Chemistry is all you need, or an internet source,

Case in point, Oklahoma City Bombing.

  2. Jay. I asked my brother about this story tonight. He is in the biotech field, but he has a doctorate in Chemistry. Fertiliser bombs, what is on the web, etc. .... these are big bombs and they can have a terrible impact. But as he told me .... there are other bombs that are incredibly destructive, and only someone who is very knowledgeable about chemistry can put it together. That is why they are rarely if ever used .... not because terror groups decide to not use it .... it is just that they cannot. But it looks like ISIS now has someone who can.

    1. The Oklahoma City bombers added propane to the "mix" in the form of 20lb propane tanks,

Others have added LOX Cylenders, along with fu-gas,

      Others, hydrogen peroxide,

Then there is the addition of wafarin, tungsten beads, tungsten dust, used razor blades,

You don't need to be a chemist to "reshape" or "tailor" a bomb, all you need is a sick mind and Google.

These are the same guy's who kept one step ahead of the US's EW Program's to try to "neutralize" IED's, moving from wires, to garage door openers, to cell phones, to encrypted Motorola radios, to laser pointer's epoxied to a scope and the receptor from a TV for the remote controls.

  3. A thorough knowledge of chemistry will give you an edge the lethslity of your bombs without needing a 8 tonne truck to deliver it.

    1. You don't need to be a chemist to build a "better" VBIED.

The Iraqi Insurgency was chewing up US Forces with Toyotal Tercel's in 2003.

  4. They were recruiting foreign bomb makers those who were specialst in chemistry.
No you dont have to but it makes building and designing that much safer quicker and efficent.
