Dave Majumdar, National Interest: Why the United States Should Exercise Restraint Before Launching A New War in Syria
The Russians might not be willing to back down in a confrontation with American forces.
Tensions between Russia and the United States are coming to a head over the civil war in Syria. Washington has suspended bilateral talks with Russia to end the five-year old war. Moscow has suspended an agreement to destroy 34 tons of weapons-grade plutonium that was reached during the year 2000, using especially harsh rhetoric. Meanwhile, Syrian regime forces—with the backing of Russian airpower—are continuing to mount a fierce attack on the partially rebel-held city of Aleppo with Washington seemingly powerless to influence events on the ground.
As a result of the recent collapse of a ceasefire negotiated by Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the subsequent Syrian regime offensive, there are many in Washington clamoring for firmer U.S. action—a so-called Plan B. However, President Obama and his National Security Council staff are faced with limited options. Among the four options that may be under consideration are a no-fly-zone, safe zones, attacking the Syrian air force and arming the Syrian rebels with additional weaponry. But each option carries with it significant risk of escalation or blowback.

WNU Editor: The author is wondering if Russia would stand idly by if U.S. air power was used to strike Syrian units .... even if Russian forces are embedded. I can easily answer that .... in the eyes of Moscow it would be a deliberate act of war, and they would retaliate, and that retaliation would not be limited within Syria. Fortunately .... President Obama may be publicly making it known right now that he is entertaining certain military options .... U.S. Considering Military Options On Syria (Updated) .... I doubt that he would follow through with less than 4 months in his Presidency. But in the event that he does initiate military action against Syrian and Russian military units .... I will then be blogging from the basement of my chalet in woods of northern Quebec for as long as the electricity and internet stays on.
Russia is tne most powerful military force on earth. The United Xtates has no hope of measuring up.
ReplyDeleteNone of tnis is to suggest Russia is "good." Recognize reality. Act accordingly.
Would an American President leave his/her/cis/zir successor unstable foreign and domestic situations for political purposes..............nah!?!?!?
ReplyDeleteRussia has the most powerful military in the world? lol
ReplyDeleteHans,
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing funny about this. Russia is the most powerful military force on earth. Laughing about it will not change reality.
I'm not sure where you are from. I live in America. My country will bear the brunt of a Russian military reprisal should things get worse.
Takkng on the world's most powerful military force is no small or laughing matter. While there may be a time and place for it, neither Syria, Ukraine, nor anything in Eastern Europe is worth this. In other words, this isn't worth a fight with the world's most powerful military.

ReplyDeleteI'm familiar with the article. If this the article I think you are referring to, it fails to properly account for cyber warfare capabilities, intelligence gather capabilities, information dissemination capabilities, proper training of military personnel, morale of the troops. and it fails to properly weight nuclear weapons capabilities. As such, this article like many others are not worth the paper they are printed on or the bandwidth they take up.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. Respectfully I would suggest getting outside of the mainstream media, do some research, and think for yourself instead of simply having the media spoon feed information to you.
As I've stated here many times, we cannot "know" the outcome of a given war until it is actually fought. Even if you are correct, best case scenario, 10s of millions of Americans on the US mainland will die in a war with either Russia or China. While there may well be a time and a place for such a conflict, neither Ukraine, the rebels in Syria, or eastern Europe are worth such a conflict and, as I stated, should these things go really, really bad it is going to be America who bears the brunt of a Russian reprisal not Western Europe.
I do do research respectively, and you got a hard on for Russia, if it all spills over the whole world is doomed not just USA they be no brunt, everywhere will be doomed
