President-Elect Trump: 'Let There Be A Nuclear Arms Race'

NBC: Trump on Nukes: 'Let It Be an Arms Race'

President-elect Donald Trump suggested Friday that he is willing to engage in "an arms race," insisting that the United States will surpass its rivals and "outlast them all" in a push for global weapons dominance.

"Let it be an arms race. We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all," Trump said in a statement to "Morning Joe" host Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC.

Trump's assertion comes the day after he tweeted that the United States "must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes."

WNU Editor: This brings back the good old memories of the 1980s when the left was freaking out over President Reagan on this issue. So instead of all of us dying from Climate Change 30 years from now .... we will all be fried in a nuclear fire tomorrow.

  1. There already is a nuclear arms race. Unfortunately the United States has allowed its nuclear deterant to decay. Others have not.

By saying let there be a nuclear arms race this is simply stating reality. Given the current situation, America needs to upgrade and expand its nuclear arsenal. Additionally other nations cannot be under America's "nuclear umbrella." America and its nuclear arsenal would be hard pressed to defend America let alone others.

Recently Mr. Putin has made a similar statement that Russia needs to expand its nuclear arsenal. Yet this is being ignored. One would think such a profound statement made by the most powerful person in the world would warrant more attention. Instead the media focuses almost entirely on Mr. Trump. In saying what he has said, Mr. Trump is either 1.) responding Mr. Putin or 2.)he is following up on what he correctly pointing out on the campaign trail that America's nuclear arsenal is aging and we aren't even sure if it will work if needed. As such, naturally it needs to be expanded and modernized regardless of what Mr. Putin says. This is especially urgent now that more powers have these weapons.

Attempts at stopping nuclear weapons buildup were doomed to fail. The problems are manifold. Perhaps the biggest problem is all efforts were and are being focused on America and getting it eliminate or curtail its nuclear arsenal. The Russians, Chinese, and others were never expected to do anything. Such one sided approaches cannot be expected to succeed.

With that said I'm not sure how DJT expects the United States to outlast anyone. With America's massive national debt, crumbling infrastructure, broken military, old nuclear arsenal, and collapsing economy it seems rather ridiculous to think America is going to outlast either Russia or China in such an endeavor. The purpose of such an arsenal is to make any attack on us so costly to an adversary that they will not consider the attack in the first place.

It is NOT to challenge Russia and China for world dominance. These are the world's dominant powers, will be for the foreseeable future, we cannot change it, we need to get used to it, adjust to it, and act accordingly. If this can be done, good outcomes for America are still possible. Failure to recognize reality seldom ends well.
