WNU Editor: China has been ‘stepping up its preparedness for a possible military conflict with the US’ for as long as I can remember. When I was living and working in China in the 1980s .... my Chinese hosts always told me that the real threats to their country were from India, Japan, Vietnam, and the U.S. .... and to placate these worries they started to modernise and build-up their military. Flash forward to today .... the Chinese are still saying the same thing (with the South China Sea dispute now added to their list of concerns).... and are using the same excuses to modernise and build-up their military. The difference between now and then is that countries like India, Vietnam, Japan, and the U.S. are listening to what the Chinese are saying and doing .... and they are responding in kind.
