Riots Rock Berkeley University

The Hill: UC Berkeley cancels Milo Yiannopoulos event after violent protests break out on campus

University of California, Berkeley is on a campus-wide lockdown after protests broke out against Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos, an alt-right leader who was scheduled to speak at the school.

Yiannopoulos's event has been canceled, and university police urged students to shelter in place and stay away from the protest area.

Videos from campus show fires breaking out, and students on the scene say firecrackers were thrown.

Yiannopoulos took to Facebook to post about the incident after he left the California campus.

"I have been evacuated from the UC Berkeley campus after violent left-wing protestors tore down barricades, lit fires, threw rocks and Roman candles at the windows and breached the ground floor of the building," he wrote.

Update #1: UC Berkeley cancels right-wing provocateur’s talk amid violent protest (SFGate).

WNU Editor: I have no problem in having either extreme left wing or extreme right wing speakers at a campus .... debate/argument/discussion .... that is what a university is all about. But in this case it got waaayyy beyond ugly by those who are hostile to speech from the other side. Beatings, arson and destruction, black-shirts running rampage. Bottom line .... Gay-Jewish-Conservatives are not wanted on the campus of Berkeley .... Who knew there were so many homophobic, racist xenophobes at Berkeley (Todd Starnes, FOX News). The main stream media is (as predicted) blaming the visiting speaker .... Milo Yiannopoulos Gets Schooled at Berkeley: Ferocious Protests Greet Right-Wing Provocateur (Newsweek).

Update #2: President Trump is warning that there will be repercussions .... Trump threatens to pull U.C. Berkeley funding after protests against Milo Yiannopoulos turn violent (Politico)

  1. I had gone to that school for graduate work. Of course that place is well known for its protest, etc., as in Nam war...I am a firm believer that the president of the school, or the state officials, or the provost, should take a leadership role in dealing with this. But that the president should at every instance he dislikes threaten a huge state institution with cutting off their funding is clearly a threat to the way we conduct our lives. What happened to States' Rights?

  4. Berkeley receives over $300 million in federal monies per year. If they prohibit free speech .... we then have a problem .... and there is a problem here. But the big story is not the riot .... it is that only one person was arrested when this mayhem and the assault on supporters of the speaker was finally over. That speaks volumes on how the campus and city authorities decided to treat this riot.

  5. There is no right to riot, and violently destroy property, for any reason, let alone because someone you disagree with was scheduled to speak there. If these riots aren't quelled they will simply spread and get more violent, whenever a bunch of special snowflakes is offended
