Why The Battle For Control Of The Tabqa Dam In ISIS Controlled Syria Is Important


A video recently released by IS terrorists showed the damage an alleged coalition strike had caused to the dam and an unexploded missile inside the devastated control room.

A strategic dam overlooking the so-called Islamic State’s capital and final stronghold could pose a ‘biblical’ threat to tens of thousands of Syrians.

On the night of March 21, 2017, U.S. military helicopters airlifted fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces rebel group in a daring attack on a strategic dam outside the town of Tabqa, just 20 miles west of Raqqa, the de facto capital of ISIS’s self-declared “caliphate” in central Syria.

The initial fighting ended quickly. With U.S. Army Apache gunships flying top cover, SDF troops had seized the southern approach to the Tabqa dam, aka the Euphrates dam, within three days.

“Seizing Tabqa dam will isolate Raqqa from three sides and give the SDF the strategic advantage and launching point needed for the liberation of the city,” the headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition stated.

WNU Editor: The expectation is that the offensive to retake Raqqa will begin in a few weeks. When that happens, the battle will probably first start at the Tabqa Dam.
