Newsweek: China's Military Challenges US by Expanding Island Bases, Report Finds
China has been building new military facilities on artificial islands established in the contested waters of the South China Sea, a direct challenge to U.S. foreign policy, according to the latest report by a Washington think tank.
The U.S. has long accused China of creating man-made islands in the South China Sea to enforce Beijing’s vast territorial claims, which are disputed by a number of surrounding countries. Further suspicions that China is using the new land masses to bolster its military in the region were apparently validated by a report released Thursday by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI), a branch of the nonpartisan Center for Strategic and International Studies. The report, “China's Big Three Near Completion,” uses satellite imagery to detail new military and dual-use installations on three of the internationally contested Spratly Islands.

IMO China has better claim on some of the islands like the Paracels based on Zheng He's voyages. Vietnam's claim is based on a later French claim.
ReplyDeleteThat said China's future relations with Brunei, The Phillipines, Malaysia and Vietnam will be hurt, if they are unreasonable. Not speaking about the Paracels, but the other islands?
Phillipine and American relations are still hurt by McKinley's wrong-headed decision in the 19th. the decision was based on wanting a coaling /naval station, wanting a market for American manufactured goods and wanting to keep European powers out.
The weight of these factors may have been 30%, 60% & 10%, respectively. That is a wag, but there it is.
The coaling base could have been obtained through treaty. Keeping the European powers out could have also been through a treaty. That leaves markets. Those should never be obtained by unequal treaties or mercantilism. McKinley made a bad mistake in the latter and he knew it, but went ahead anyway.
If necessary resources are properly in someone else's back yard those can be obtained through trade. Such a thing will not hurt an economy as much as government intervention to take land away form other governments.
Besides if China really wants Malaysian land (islands) they can start a war with Malaysia with some sort or pretext, an R2P pretext.
You fight a war, you a seize land, it is yours (Ask Russian about Kaliningrad or what it took from Poland or Romania). That has more legal basis than what China has now for the southern portion of its 9 dashed line.
Aizino..did you write this? Doesn't sound like you...Meds working? :)
ReplyDeleteLeftist Anon,
ReplyDeleteI know history.
You not so much.
I think that China should give up 10% to 30% of islands claimed for reason of international diplomacy and economics.
I do believe that China has a stronger claim rot the Paracels than Vietnam. I find it ironic that Vietnam bases its claim on the imperialistic French claim. That's funny.
I do believe that China will make some of the same mistakes as McKinley.
The Germans were looking to colonize the Phillipines. Nature abhors a vacuum. Admiral Dewey ran them off. This made German American relations worse. In fact the Germans considered invading the U.S. around this time (actually ABOUT 10 YEARS BEFORE).
I guess given libtard logic, we should have not run the Germans off, because low public opinion in other countries of America is always America's fault.
Admiral Dewey actually brought over President Aguinaldo from China to the Phillipines.
ADMIRAL DEWEY & MARK TWAIN BOTH THOUGHT THAT MCKINELY bother did the wrong thing.
Now Mark Twain was a smart man. He thought Democrats (Leftists) should be buried face down & upside, when they died. That way they would not vote after death. I think this is a bully idea. It would cut down on voter fraud.
Lefty Anon,
