Are Foreign Diplomats Laughing At President Trump?

Business Insider: Foreign diplomats are laughing at Trump, but they're no closer to figuring him out

The consternation President Donald Trump has inspired in many Americans has perhaps been felt even more acutely by foreign diplomats, who have been trying to size up the American leader since he surged to the front of the crowded Republican primary field.

After the publication of full transcripts of Trump's calls with the leaders of Mexico and Australia, some of those diplomats were able to have a laugh at his expense.

But the details revealed by the transcripts may not give them any more insight into dealing with the mercurial US president.

WNU Editor: My read is different .... most of these diplomats in Washington are worried about their jobs, and their superiors back home are worried because their leaders are demanding intel on how to deal and negotiate with President Trump. What also does not help the situation is that many senior State Department positions have not been filled since the inauguration .... it is these officials who have in the past kept foreign diplomats in the loop on what was happening in Washington, and in turn these diplomats were able to inform their superiors back home on what was happening in the U.S.. For better or worse .... that chain of information has been broken, and no one knows when it will be back to "normal". Personally .... I like the chaos .... and to see these diplomats do something that they are not use to .... which is sweat a bit and worry that their political superiors are not happy with the little work that they are producing.

  1. WNU,
Yeah, the gravy train might have jumped the tracks and these guys are as you say "sweat a bit and worry".

  2. Editor,

"...I like the chaos..." In this instance, I tend to agree.

Us "diplomat" with their ant-American agendas combined with their monumental incompetence have long been a problem for the US. While we feel bad for their familes, it's good to see some of them sweat and frankly if the employment of some of them are terminated frankly we'd all be better off.

With that said the line of communication goes both ways and will eventually need to be restored. We also need to be in the loop on what Russia, China, and the EU nations are thinking etc.

So, that's the Australian fall out where Hair Twitler can't, even though Turnbull has to eventually try to "instruct" Hair Twitler like a three year old, understand the meaning of "boats" or that Australia's an Island.

and as horrible as the Mexican phone transcript paints Hair Twitler, the context is even worse. 15 minutes after hanging up on Hair Furour, Nieto called Trudeau.

The transcript of that call, would be very interesting.

  4. You have to be really demented to think that the conversation between Nieto and Trump was bad.

The WaPo published it in full.

"“I have been given as President tremendous taxation powers for trade and for other reasons — far greater than anybody understands. The powers of taxation are tremendous for the President of the United States and if you study that you will see what I mean.”

Per Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution the power to tax lies with Congress, not the President. In fact, Per Article I, Section 7, all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House.

      "
“My people stand up and say, “Mexico will pay for the wall” and your people probably say something in a similar but slightly different language. But the fact is we are both in a little bit of a political bind because I have to have Mexico pay for the wall — I have to. I have been talking about it for a two year period . . . you and I are both at a point now where we are both saying we are not to pay for the wall. From a political standpoint, that is what we will say. We cannot say that anymore because if you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that. I am willing to say that we will work it out, but that means it will come out in the wash and that is okay. But you cannot say anymore that the United States is going to pay for the wall.”

      begging,

Nieto - “my position has been and will continue to be very firm saying that Mexico cannot pay for that wall”

Trump-“But you cannot say that to the press. The press is going to go with that and I cannot live with that. You cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances.”

“I want you to be so popular that your people will call for a constitutional amendment in Mexico so that you can run again for another six years.”

“Your words are so beautiful. Those are beautiful words and I do not think I can speak that beautifully, okay? It would be great to put those words at the end of the statement.”

  5. Obama imposed punitive tariffs on China

Apparently, the president can impose tariffs.

Congress can pass a bill to take it away and then be unseated.
