The Guardian: North Korea could test hydrogen bomb in Pacific, says foreign minister

North Korea could respond to Donald Trump’s threats of military action by testing a powerful nuclear weapon in the Pacific Ocean, the country’s foreign minister has said, hours after the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, said the US president would “pay dearly” for threatening to destroy the regime.

Ri Yong-ho, who is due to address the UN general assembly at the weekend, told reporters in New York: “It could be the most powerful detonation of an H-bomb in the Pacific. We have no idea about what actions could be taken as it will be ordered by leader Kim Jong-un.”

  1. That's just words, yet, as it was for missiles to Guam. Still, NoKo has to make an answer and it will be real this time. I don't expect this kind of answer make the situation better.

  2. H-bombs are comparatively clean unless they're detonated at ground level (or at least, low enough for the fireball to touch the ground or the sea, which is the mechanism by which the most deadly and concentrated fallout/radiation contamination occurs). Most of their energy output is in thermal radiation and blast. Neutron activation is comparatively low, as neutrons don't propagate well in the air. Prompt radiation is relatively low.

If it's an airburst, the radioactive particles will be diluted by global high-altitude winds, and decay to become significantly less dangerous to people.

It's not 'harmless': it's just less dangerous to humans. After each of the extensive atmospheric nuclear testing rounds of the past fifty years, fish stocks in major oceanic fisheries declined significantly. It took years for the stocks to begin recovery.
