Why Is The Pentagon Collecting Russian DNA?

BBC: Russians' DNA taken by foreign agents, Kremlin says

The Kremlin says foreign agents are collecting DNA samples from Russians of different ethnicities and sending the data abroad for scientific analysis.

The agents were often working for foreign NGOs, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Mr Putin told a Russian human rights committee that the DNA collection was "systematic and professional".

Some scientists quoted in the Russian media speculated that the data could be used in US biological warfare research.

  1. Technological advancements in area's that are happening today was thought of as science fiction not so long ago.

Imagine if they had the means to create a virus that could target you based on your DNA...

My brother is one of the top people in the world in biotech. AS he has told me more than once .... if someone wants to .... they can engineer almost anything. The problem is that you will not be able to control it once it is released. A few years back through my brother I met someone who was working with a group to target the plant that cocaine is derived from. They basically wanted to develop a blight that would target and kill the plant. But when Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador learned about it .... they moved heaven and earth to convince the U.S. to stop the project. The fear was not that it would kill the coca plant, but that the blight that they would engineer may mutate and attack other species of plants.

    1. Yeah that's the problem. ..anything can mutate. There's a fix for it though and I'm sure your brother knows it

  3. From PNAC - Rebuilding Americas Defenses page 60: "Information systems will become an important focus of attack, particularly for U.S. enemies seeking to short-circuit sophisticated American forces. And advanced forms of biological warfare that can 'target' specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool."

  4. My guess is that they are trying to develop a biological agent and they want to see if it's possible to target Russian ethnicities only. And I can tell you unless you go for a very narrow spectrum it will not be possible (thank God). Luckily humans are very very similar, especially Caucasians. Having said that, there may be receptors or other proteins expressed in Russian populations that let you target some of them more effectively, but no way this could be done reliably and limited to Russians only.
