France 24: The business of war: Russian mercenaries in Syria
A paramilitary chief who serves as a contact for Russians who want to become mercenaries in Syria discusses the grim business of making war for profit. He spoke to FRANCE 24 only on condition of anonymity.
If you live near Russia's Yekaterinburg and want to fight with pro-regime forces in Syria, there’s one man you need to speak to. He is a paramilitary chief who advises Russians wanting to work for Wagner, a shadowy Kremlin-linked private military contractor known for sending mercenaries to Syria.
“Each week I receive five or six new requests,” he told FRANCE 24. “Some call me by phone, others come to see me. About a hundred people in the region are planning to go to Syria.”

Update: Russian mercenaries reportedly want revenge after getting whooped by US forces in Syria (Business Insider)
WNU Editor: France 24's Russian contact believes 218 Russian mercenaries were killed by U.S. forces after their attack on a U.S. position in Syria was repelled, and that many of these bodies will not be returned to the families until after the Russian election. I am surprised by that high number, but I am not surprised that these bodies will not be released until the votes had been counted.

ReplyDeleteMy advice to Russian mercs would be to let that particular sleeping dog lie.
ReplyDeleteThey ought to look at their leadership for satisfaction. They sent them to the slaughter without a clue on how the Americans would react. It's not the Americans fault for defending themselves.
ReplyDeleteAgree, they should let sleeping dogs lie and look inward for answers. This was a massive FUBAR on somebody on the Russian side. It is baffling as to why they did what they did.
ReplyDeleteThis might be a problem. These are battle hardened vets of the chechen war,Donbass and a few of the trully older ones maybe even Afghanistan. Most of them are not the kind of guys that just forget.Problem is if they really want revenge they'll probably know how to do it.They screwed up the first time they won't screw up the next.Unfortunately if they do something that takes out a similar number of american troops the US might not differentiate between mercs who wanted revenge and the Russian Army in Syria. And from there to who knows what?
ReplyDeleteThe US are not operating a Merc army of all Americans fighting on the frontlines, so the chance of a mass casualty event for them is slim to none. They may want revenge, but they should direct it at their own folks not someone defending themselves. A lot of people talk trash about how the US military sucks and all but they still are the best out there. If these mercs do something stupid again they will get destroyed again. IMHO.
ReplyDeleteDon't be so sure, if they were to have access to a smerch you will have your mass casualty event at a u.s FOB, what follows with russian plausible deniability or not is anyone's guess.
