Update #2: Xi Jinping proposes a four-party peace treaty (The Dong-A Ilbo)
WNU editor: I proposed somewhat the same idea a few weeks ago. The first thing that needs to be done is an agreement to an armistice (the Korean war never officially ended 65 years ago). After that agreement .... a formal peace treaty. I originally thought that an agreement between the two Korean governments would be good enough, but President Xi's idea to involve all parties is even better. If an agreement can be reached, it will then bind everyone to respect it and give it more substance. But President Trump is also correct to insist that everyone does not get ahead of themselves .... that everyone should not lose focus on on the primary issue of North Korea and its nuclear weapons.
Who would trust the North Koreans after their decades long record of duplicity? I’d give a free and democratic South Korea less than 10 years before it falls to the North. The
ReplyDeleteI suggest people not forget that North Korea is not a legitimate government--it is a dictatorship that has murdered millions of its own people and is lead by a madman who is both bloodthirsty and brutal. If the US signs any agreement with NK, expect to regret it in the future. The only approach to take is to continue with the sanctions to strangle NK economically.
ReplyDeleteNote this approach would not be necessary if Democratic Presidents Bill Clinton and Barrack Hussain Obama has not been such liberal cowards.
My big fear it would lock everything in place. The Korean peninsula separated. North Korea legitimized. China with a proxy state. South Korea always looking over shoulder. To me it’s still up to the South Koreans to choose what they really wish. and I think they are giving up on the dream of a unified Korea.
ReplyDeleteWay to premature for even suggesting such a treaty. When Kim's nuclear programme has been abandoned and his existing weapons destroyed and existing infrastructures dismantled (and verified by the international inspectors) then such a treaty can be discussed.
