Can The U.S. Pursue An Afghan Strategy Without Pakistan?

Anwar Iqbal, DW: Is the US bypassing Pakistan for new Taliban strategy?

The US has decided to seek "the right Taliban leadership" without waiting for Pakistan to play its role in persuading the rebels to join peace talks with the Afghan government. Anwar Iqbal reports from Washington.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo revealed a new strategy for Taliban negotiations at a congressional hearing earlier this week, where he also claimed that US officials and diplomats were "being treated badly" in Pakistan.

"The effort (is) to apply all elements of the United States' government pressure, so that the Taliban will come to the negotiating table," he told the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "Now we need to find the right leadership inside the Taliban to participate in those discussions."

WNU Editor: The U.S. has been working with Pakistan for almost 17 years on trying to bring peace to Afghanistan. I say that after 17 years of war .... it is time to look for another strategy.

  1. Pakistan is a China ally. We cannot expect anything from it. Again and again: go out of Afghanistan. Of course there is bad side of that, but I strongly prefer China as hard time with Taliban than us.

    2. "Mr. Rusky," very respectfully read the posts in their entirety. Had you bothered To do so you'd know I'm not "rusky." This type of slander is typically deployed when one has no message or they are trying to discredit someone but their arguments lack merit. Then they resort to slander.

Please note, in my post, I did not advocate staying or leaving. We have been relying on Pakistan for 17 years. It hasn't worked. To continue such an approach is insane.

New strategies need to be formulated. Leaving is but one possibility. While there may be other options, leaving is clearly better than the current one.

You mention Syria. Syria is cometely different from Afghanistan. To compare these is to compare Apples to oranges.

Furthermore we (The United States) has had a large role in the mess that is Syria. When in a hole, the first step is STOP DIGGING!!
