BBC: US tariffs: Steel and aluminium levies slapped on key allies

The US is to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from allies in Europe and North America.

The US said a 25% tax on steel and 10% tax on aluminium from the EU, Mexico and Canada will start at midnight.

The move immediately triggered vows of retaliation from Mexico and the EU, which called the tariffs "protectionism, pure and simple".

The UK said it was "deeply disappointed" by the US decision, which followed weeks of negotiations.

EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said it was a "bad day for world trade", while European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said the move was "totally unacceptable.

WNU Editor: I cannot say that I am surprised. There has been no progress on trade issues, and the U.S. President is now implementing what he promised last year on what he would do if there was no progress. My prediction for the future .... expect a lot of tit-for-tat moves in the coming weeks.

  1. Perspective is in order. Trump went to Europe in May 2017 offering US natural gas to all comers as a way for Europe to diversify their natural gas supply. Now over 1 year later a trade war is starting. What happened? Germany signed on to NordStream 2 for Russian natural gas. That's what happened. Germany says its cheaper than American LNG, all true. But that is a bogus argument since Germany loves to spend far more per kilowatt for solar or wind energy than American LNG costs.
The EU could have committed to buying bulk American LNG in the future to reduce their current account surplus and refused. That shows a lack of good will on the EU's(Germany's) side.

  3. Antitroll,

The US has been written off many, many times before. I would not be so quick to count us out.

    Anon,

I remember this. This is an example of perhaps hatred for Trump and perhaps for America taking precedent over one's national interests. They could have been reasonable, treated POTUS and America as an equal and with respect, and we likely could have reached an agreement all of us could have lived with. Instead they chose to act in the opposite manner.
