The Case For President Trump's Tariffs

Dan DiMicco, The Hill: Other nations forced Trump's hand on steel tariffs

There’s a lot of fuss right now about President Trump imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Critics fret about a trade war. Others worry there will be disruptions to global markets.

Just how bad are things right now for U.S. manufacturing?

Steel production in the U.S. has fallen by 20 percent over the past decade alone. And steel employment has dropped by roughly 50,000 jobs since 2000.

  1. It is easy for elites to condemn. Place yourself in a rotting out America with little to no upward mobility and a bleak future. In the majorities place you might have a different perspective on trade and it's impacts on America's majority.

  2. Anon,

You raise an intersting point. As a small business owner who assists other small business owners, we understand these things.

Actually the vote for Trump was far more primal than is general understood by the elites. We understood that a vote for HRC was a vote for the status quo and the status quo was literally suicidal. As such, we had no choice. Take a chance on Trump or commit suicide.

Due to the very nature of the elites they are often insulated from the results of their bad decisions for a time. In contrast, the "rubes" must deal with them in full force straight on. As such, to many a vote for Trump was a "no brainer."

Will it work out? While the end result is not known, so far so good!!

  3. Well done! First it shows the world that America is not functioning anymore like the previous Administration which was always in retreat. Finished! That's also a message for the future: steel and aluminum are a very little part of the international exchange, next step could be car.America export little (25% tariff in Europe and China vs 2% in USA)and that's a much, much bigger part of the exchange. We shall see.
