German Chancellor Angela Merkel Warns President Trump Against A Trade War

AFP: Merkel warns against trade war as Trump takes aim at cars

Berlin (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday warned US President Donald Trump against unleashing an all-out trade war after he threatened to impose steep tariffs on cars from the European Union.

In a speech to lawmakers at the Bundestag, Merkel said both sides were effectively locked in a "trade conflict" since Trump's decision to slap punitive tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

"It is worthwhile to prevent this conflict from becoming a real war," she said, adding however that this "would require both sides" to take steps.

Trump on Sunday charged that Europe is "possibly as bad as China" on trade, as he reiterated that he is mulling import taxes of 20 percent on EU cars.

    1. I agree. Merkel has fallen. ..and I really liked her. .but the whole refugee thing was just handled poorly.. "wir schaffen das" went quickly to "let the Italians deal with it"..just a mess! She's been in office too long and just got detached from reality. German friends told me that women get raped and crime went up. Cnn tells you you're a racist for even talking about it. Merkel is Cnn. Trump is fox. The world is polarised, but, despite that Merkel got a phd in physics, Trump is more right on the issue because we don't live in a phantasy world and rape and crime uptake is real and not imagined and it is OK to have a problem with it
