Does The New U.S. Defense Bill 'Stick It' To Russia?

PJ Media: Watch Fox News' Jennifer Griffin's Stellar 70-Second Explanation of How the Defense Bill Sticks It to Russia

Today, President Trump signed the "John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act" in a ceremony at Fort Drum in New York. The bill for this year represents a shift away from the intense focus on the War on Terror to more broadly deal with major geopolitical threats from nations like China and, well, Russia as it turns out.

The bill, named in honor of decorated war hero and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), authorizes how monies will be allocated, rather than an actual allocation thereof, and it's important for many reasons, not least being how it determines defense footing.

In the case of Russia, that footing is now decidedly aggressive, as Fox News' Jennifer Griffin explains in the clip below.

WNU Editor: Fox News' Jennifer Griffin makes a number of good points, and you have to wonder if President Trump actually read the Bill that he signed.

  1. We've been sticking the whole world when it comes to defence spending. Don',t take it personally.

  2. "We've been sticking the whole world when it comes to defence spending." Maybe this is a case of "having to spend money to make money" at this point. I certainly hope so. In the past, this has netted us very little benefit relative to adversaries and potential adversaries.

There are some aspects of this that I find troubling. 1.)It appears we are going to take our eyes off of the proverbial ball in fighting the war against Islamic terrorism. This is at a time when we finally seem to be making some headway here in order to focus on a conflict with Russia we don't really need, can't readily afford without massive new debt, and may not be able to win. 2.)POTUS is supposedly prohibited from ordering the US military to work with Russia in Syria. This seems a lame brained idea if there ever was one. Of course the militaries are going to need to be in contact and may need to be flexible enough to cooperate in order to prevent a conflict from spiraling out of control. As such, they are going to cooperate with each other regardless of what some idiot US politicians think or write. 3.)POTUS can't recognize Crimea as Russian. In other words, we ignore reality. Crimea is Russian. This cannot be changed. Eventually the Europeans will come to this conclusion and will tire of this. Did the US pols even think about that and what happens when this happens? 4.)The article suggests that POTUS's opponents should be perplexed. They need not be. The actual policies of POTUS have been much harsher towards Russia than those of his predecessor while leaving open a door for diplomacy. What does seem clear is a public dressing down of Putin arguably the most powerful man in the world as reported by Forbes is not going to be a productive policy even though some would get their jollies out of such "feel good" behavior.
