Reuters: North Korea's Kim sets denuclearization time line, prompting thanks from Trump

SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has given his first time line for denuclearization, aiming for the end of U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term, Seoul officials said on Thursday, prompting thanks from Trump who said they would “get it done together”.

Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will also meet in Pyongyang on Sept. 18-20 for a third summit and discuss “practical measures” toward denuclearization, Moon’s national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, said a day after meeting Kim.

The summit could provide renewed momentum to talks over denuclearization between North Korea and the United States, after Trump canceled a visit to Pyongyang by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last month citing lack of progress.

WNU Editor: As this blog had predicted yesterday .... South Korean Envoys Meet North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un To Prepare For A Third Summit (September 5, 2018), all sides are now getting down to the nitty-gritty on what needs to be done. I personally think the goal of being nuclear free by the end of President Trump's first term is too optimistic. But if they can agree to inspectors and a third party to receive this nuclear weapons for disposal by then .... and then start implementing this understanding .... I would call President Trump's policy a tremendous success

  2. Ha! Kim is better at trolling than our dips$%t president!

He's got great timing, sends out this message while the wet orange blob is stewing in the WH to flatter his ego. Perhaps Kim is the master 4 D chess player.

NK will hand over their weapons when regime change happens in Iran and our lord and savior raptures all the believers up to heaven.

    1. Look this might be. We all know that Trump said he'll sort the north Korea situation before his first term ends and by "one way or another". Kim knows this of course. And we know he's a player. But. ..that also means he increased the stakes. He either publicly lied to trump and the world, and will be killed for it and loses his nukes, or he gets to live and loses his nukes. I don't care one bit which way it is. And I'm guessing Kim knows that too and rather wants to live

  3. Anon,

Then we can presume your $$$ is on NK not doing as it says?
I'm thinking he will. Eventually. I would like to know China's background in NK's latest statement. I think China is a background player in this of larger dimension than acknowledged. This and the problem of feeding it's population. Seems to me I've read a few mentions of shortfalls in vittles in the last year. I'm sure America would be a factor in insuring a bite or two in NK's rice bowls if NK does indeed de-nuclearize.

    1. If china made a deal on north Korea, it likely was about Taiwan. Not the trade war. Too early for that to really bite

  4. I like what Trump is doing with North Korea and its leash handler, China.
Apply pressure unequally on them both to diplomatic, military and economic points and negotiate only when the other side weakens. Amazingly the fool Obama, the incompetent Bush nor the philandering kleptocrat Clinton could figure out a similar strategy to deal with the Kims.

  5. For me, I approve of Trumps strategy but I don't trust China nor Kim. I am just curious if this is a story line that was developed bubble China and NK to help GOP remain in power. That might not makes a lot of sense other than to suggest they like Trump in the WH.

  6. Provide one good, sensible reason why Kim would give up a nuclear deterrent that his grandfather and father spent over 50 years pursuing and he finally achieved.

It is the single and only reason that he has any relevance to international affairs.

    1. To live
If he doesn't, he has to play poker and see Trump's cards. And I would not be giving 50% to Kim will survive if he crosses Trump like that.
