Update: The F-35 has already conducted its first strike in Afghanistan .... U.S. F-35 Fighter Jet Has Just Conducted Its First-Ever Airstrike (September 27, 2018)

They have fully explored the airspace in the South China sea, North Korea, Russia while they were based in Japan and aboard ship in Japanese waters. This was reconnaissance, espionage, provoking responses, testing radars on a far more sophisticated level than we're seeing right now in Africa or that bombing run in Afghanistan.
